The process of carriage and cargo character recognition consists of the following stages:

Stage 1. Normalization of the image

Removal of noise (background characteristics), stabilizing the effects of the loss of focus, correcting for non-uniform brightness distribution from luminous sources, removal of figures or other drawings from the targeted character set.

Stage 2. Localization of the number

Isolation of regions potentially containing number for the analysis on the basis of the formal idea of the scale characteristics of identification tag.

Stage 3. The detailed analysis

The detailed analysis of the chosen regions on the basis of the formal idea of the geometric characteristics of signs, segmentation and the recognition of numbers.

Stage 4. Refinement

Refinement of the identified number as a result of repeated recognition (building a uniform data set), collation with the check sum in accordance with a standard templates, automated determination of the type of railroad car from its number.
